How To Switch Domestic Energy image How To Switch Domestic Energy image

Think switching energy supplier is difficult? Think again. Think The Energy check.

At The Energy Check, we live and breathe energy – it’s all we do all day. We know the domestic gas and electricity markets like the backs of our hands, and we’re here to take the pain out of switching your energy supplier.

Okay, why should I switch my energy supplier?

Millions of people are paying too much for their home gas and electric. The UK's energy regulator, Ofgem, is actively encouraging gas and electricity customers to use online comparison and utilities switching websites.

And another thing. You know that loyalty to one company doesn’t necessarily reward you with lower electricity and gas bills? Shocking, isn’t it? That’s why it’s always worth shopping around for a better deal.

So how do I switch with The Energy Check?

We’ve kept it nice and simple, to save you time. This is how our service works:

  • You give us your postcode.
  • You tell us how much energy you use. Your latest gas or electricity bill will tell us what we need to know, but if you don’t have it handy we can work out your usage by asking you a few quick questions.
  • We’ll use this information to generate a list of the deals available in your area, and show you how much you could save.
  • You choose the plan that suits you best.
  • We arrange the switch on your behalf.
  • Your new supplier will agree a switchover date with your old supplier, and you’ll receive a welcome pack from your new supplier to tell you what will happen next.

Why can’t I just compare cheap electricity and gas prices?

It’s not quite that simple, because there’s no one cheap provider that suits everyone. That’s why we’re here. We help you find the best energy deals in your area, based on your gas and electricity usage.

I’m interested in renewable energy suppliers. Can you still help me?

Yes we can. It doesn’t matter what you’re looking for – lower prices, green energy, outstanding customer service – the most sensible first step is to compare energy suppliers.

Our Expert Guide to Suppliers also tells you everything you need to know to help you choose a supplier you’ll be happy with.

Will my gas or electricity supply be interrupted when I switch?

No. Your gas and electricity will arrive in your home via the same pipes and cables as before, so there won’t be any disruption to your supply. The only thing that will change is the company that sends you your bill.

How do I read my electricity meter?

Electricity meters vary, and can display information in different ways. There are five different kinds of meter:

a standard electricity meter

Standard

a digital electricity meter

Digital

a dial electricity meter

Dial

an Economy 7 electricity meter

Economy 7

a pre-payment electricity meter

Prepayment

The standard meter is the most common. To take a reading, write down the five black numbers, from left to right. Don’t worry about the red numbers, if there are any.

Come to think of it, I don’t know where my electricity meter is.

That will depend on the sort of property you live in. Sometimes the meter will be in an under-stairs cupboard or utility room; sometimes it will be outside, on the side or back of the house.

If you live in an apartment building, you’ll probably find the electricity meter in a cupboard in the hallway.
