Your handy, pain-free guide to the domestic gas and electricity market

It’s all a bit mind-boggling, isn’t it? And you’ve probably got better things to do than grapple with the ins and outs of domestic energy supply, price comparisons and tariffs. That’s why The Energy Check is here. We love energy and we could talk about it all day. Actually, we do talk about it all day.

Here’s a quick introduction to the household gas and electricity market, and a few reasons you might want to consider switching your supplier.

First things first: What is The Energy Check?

We check electricity, gas and dual fuel prices -every tariff and every supplier, so you don’t have to.

We’re experts at electricity and gas, so that’s all we do – we don’t do mobile contracts, retirement planning or pet insurance!

The Energy Check is an independent energy price comparison service. We know it can be a hassle to shop around and switch energy supplier, so we do it for you.

And our service is free of charge.

How can it be free of charge? What’s in it for you?

That’s simple. We charge your new supplier a fee when you switch. That’s why we don’t need to charge you anything.

Why should I trust you?

That’s simple, too. We love energy and we’re good at it. Our staff really know their stuff. We provide the best, most thorough, most expert service around when it comes to comparing energy prices, to save you money on your gas and electricity bills.

Okay, why should I switch my energy supplier?

Gas and electricity markets in the UK are regulated by Ofgem, but prices themselves are not, so they do vary from one supplier to the next.

And another thing. Did you know that loyalty to one company doesn’t necessarily reward you with lower bills? Shocking, isn’t it? That’s why it’s always worth shopping around for a better deal.

But a cheaper gas or electricity supplier means inferior customer service, right?

Wrong. The two things don’t have to go together! Some of the best deals and customer service are provided by suppliers you may never even have heard of.

When you run our energy comparison check, the results table allows you to click through to customer reviews and satisfaction ratings, to help you make the right decision. And our Expert Guide to Suppliers has loads of other details to help you decide on the new supplier for you. All very reassuring.

Why is my electricity bill so high?

There are a number of reasons your bill could be high. But don’t worry – there are lots of things you can do to bring it down:

  • It’s a really good idea to compare energy prices– you might get a better deal by switching to a new supplier.
  • Is your bill based on an estimated reading? The only way to get an accurate bill is to take your own meter reading.
  • Perhaps you were on a fixed price plan that has expired. In this case, you’ll have been switched automatically to a different plan, with different rates. More often than not, the new plan will be more expensive. It could be time to switch energy supplier.
  • Is it possible your energy consumption is higher than it needs to be? Our experts have put together this handy collection of Energy-Saving Hints and Tips to help you.

Will electricity prices go up this year?

They probably will, yes. They rose last year and it’s unlikely they’re about to go down. But by comparing electricity prices, and switching to a new supplier, you could probably lower your bill.

Will gas prices go up?

The price of domestic gas depends on the wholesale cost paid by your supplier. If the wholesale price rises, your bill will go up too.

Price rises will only affect you if you’re on a variable rate tariff. If you switch to a fixed rate energy plan, you can protect yourself from price rises.

It’s always a good idea to compare energy prices, to see if there’s a cheaper deal you could switch to. And we’re here to help you every step of the way.
